Concealed Handgun License
Texas requires a minimum of ten hours of training for an original-issue license, and four hours of training for a renewal. In an original-license class, the state requires several areas of instruction to include: weapons laws, non-violent dispute resolution, use of force and deadly force, weapons storage and safety, and basic marksmanship including range qualification. In a concealed handgun license class, many topics will be presented, and discussed by a licensed to teach instructor.
After classroom instruction and demonstration, a proficiency course will be administered. The shooting portion will consist of three (3) distances – at three yards, seven yards, and fifteen yards – for a total of 50 rounds. There are certain time restrictions in each of these sections. Any person attempting this class shall score at least a 70% on the written examination and the shooting proficiency exam to obtain a license. A student will have three (3) attempts to pass both the written exam as well as the shooting proficiency exam.
Required Materials - CHL Classes
- Handgun of at least .32 caliber.
- A minimum of 50 rounds of approved ammunition. No reloads, Blazers or Wolf please. Due to weapon malfunctions, you will need additional rounds if you fail to qualify the first time.
- Eye and ear protection (MUST BE SAFTY GLASSES & MUFFS) If you wear eye glasses, that will work but wear a cap. Just a thought, you might want to wear protective eye wear over your glasses to keep them from getting dusty and scratched.
What You DO NOT Bring to the Range
- No pre-loaded mags
- No holsters
- *Please leave your CHL packets in your vehicle.
What You Need to Bring to the Class Room
- Your drivers license or state issued ID card.
- Your 2 Passport type photos.
- For new students a packet will be provided, renewals should have a packet.
- You can bring your pistol in the class room but keep it in the box or bag AT ALL TIMES!
Just a Reminder
Brass from a handgun is HOT. Please wear clothing that will not permit the brass/shell casing from lodging in your shirt. Wear shoes that cover your feet. A shell casing hitting your foot is hot and distracting! Also wear a brimmed cap which will keep shells away from your face. Don't forget your eye and ear protection.
